Coffee Tat

Javatattoo Congratulations to Zoner Kevin on his brand new tattoo. He got the body art to mark his 1,000,000th cup of Rocket Fuel. Up close, the tattoo appears a little blurry because Kevin was unable to hold perfectly still. But it's still some nice ink.

Kevin reports his next tat will be Taisir's face. He's just trying to decide where to put it.

Just give me what you gave the last guy

Starbucks300 You're alone in a big city. You're in meetings all day, watching endless Powerpoint presentations. You tossed and turned all night, listening to the elevator open and close and the ice machine grind, just outside your door. You get up for another day of meetings and go in search for a good cup of coffee. And there you are, waiting in line with all the other suits for a four dollar cup of chain-store java. (sigh)

Thanks to Zoner George for sharing his pain.

Taisir's Coffee Tips: Storing your coffee

Coffeestorage The key to maintaining the quality of your coffee is proper storage. Try to find a cool, dry place, with no direct sunlight. Once the bag has been opened, transfer the unused coffee to an airtight container.

When roasted, coffee develops a delicious, natural oil that contains much of the flavor. If you freeze your coffee, you'll alter that flavor. We don't recommend freezing.

Roasted coffee is very porous and the airtight container will reduce chances of picking up flavors from nearby food.

Taisir goes mobile!

Newlaptop

Taisir turned loose of a few Zone Bucks to purchase a new Dell laptop which he keeps close at hand while slinging lattes and Rocket Fuel. He promises service will not suffer.

Inmates take over asylum

Taisir made the mistake of leaving the coffee bar unattended for a few minutes and that was long enough for Randy Allen to commandeer the Rocket Fuel.

Zoner trapped in Nebraska coffee joint

Chuckscooters Coffee Zone regular Chuck Zimmerman video'd in a report from Lincoln, NE (a Coffee Zone free zone ??) where he's making do with something called Scooter's. We think it's sort of like Hooters but they only serve Maxwell House and the waitresses are volunteers from the local senior center.

PS: Note that Chuck has dyed his hair to match the Scooter's logo.

Freshly ground coffee makes a difference

Taisir recommends that your coffee be freshly ground prior to brewing. If you are looking for grinder, consider purchasing a burr grinder. Blade grinders can create inconsistent grinds and should be avoided.

GrinderBlade Grinders
Most inexpensive grinders use a metal blade to chop up the beans. The blade cuts up the beans, and you control the fineness by how long you let the grinder run. Unfortunately, the resulting coffee grounds can be uneven in size, leading to inconsistant brew quality.

Burr Grinders
Burr grinders crush the beans between a moving grinding wheel and a non-moving surface. The positioning on the burr is what regulates the ground size, which allows for a more consistant grind. In the burr category, there are two different types.

More on grinders at About.com.

Taisir's coffee brewing tips

  • French_press150 Make sure that your coffee brewer is properly cleaned ,and functioning correctly .
  • Ideally ,coffee is brewed at 195 f or 90 c.
  • Use fresh water (preferably filtered)
  • I recommend 2 tablespoons of ground coffee per cup of coffee. For stronger coffee, use 1 more tablespoon of ground coffee... for lighter coffee, use less.

For an exciting alternative, consider using a French Press coffee maker .
